Ryan Tierney was beloved by everyone who knew him, and even by many who barely knew him at all, people who had just enjoyed a laugh thanks to his legendary sense of humor. Tierney was a regular cast member on the second season of Before the Bells, and his wit kept the entire school laughing all year long.
When he passed away last fall, several people asked if there were any of his old Before the Bells tapes remaining, and at the time I was unable to locate any, but I found one more box of tapes in our process of moving out of the old studio, so I hooked up the last remaining VCR in the Telecom room and fired it up to see what I could find. It was a long shot (to say the least) since all the tapes were just labeled “Before the Bells” with no dates, but eventually I found one single videotape that made the search a success.
What follows below is a series of episodes with terrible image quality (which is a running theme with all our remaining VHS tapes), but nobody’s going to be watching them for the image clarity.
One of the funniest things about these episodes is the number of things we all got away with in the early/mid 90’s in Stew’s class that would never fly today, not because I run the program like a hardo, but because things have just changed so much since those days. I mean, if I had to run a lap for every time I saw something in here that wouldn’t make the air on our current shows, I might end up running 10 miles.
And by the way, I’m sorry if anyone’s embarrassed about their detention getting posted on the internet here, but I’m pretty sure there has to be a statute of limitations on how long you’re allowed to be embarrassed about getting a detention when you were 17.
