Girls Basketball @ Norwell

Nicole Beresford scored 29 points (including 24 of the team’s 27 in the first half), but the Rams lost 44-41 in the championship game of the 2010 Lapels Holiday Tournament against host Norwell. Beresford was on fire early, scoring 12 points each in the first and second quarters, leading Marshfield to a 27-20 halftime lead, but the Clippers adjusted defensively in the second half to charge back and take the win. Marshfield struggled in the final two quarters, at least in part because several key players were limited by various injuries. Nevertheless, the Rams will hope to move on next week and forget a frustrating second half in which they hit only 4 of 37 shots from the field.

Girls Basketball vs. Martha’s Vineyard

The opening game of the 2010 Lapels Holiday Tournament in Norwell didn’t exactly go the way the Rams might have drawn it up, but they got the result they were looking for in the end. Despite trailing by 7 with just a minute and a half remaining in the game, Marshfield came back to beat Martha’s Vineyard, 44-42. The game was won in spectacular fashion, as Kelly Fitzgerald stole a Vineyard pass at the top of the key and raced by a defender to lay the ball in and tie the game with 20 seconds left on the clock. Martha’s Vineyard took the ball down for one last shot but missed, and the Rams hustled the rebound down the floor in the final seconds. Nicole Beresford (24 points) launched a long pass to Erin Doherty, who corralled it as she was falling out of bounds, but Doherty was able to quickly dish her own pass to Jess Kelliher along the baseline, and Kelliher nailed the game winning jump shot just 1 second before time expired. Our coverage of the thrilling finish is available below.
