Baseball vs. Plymouth North

To even the most loyal Marshfield fans, Friday’s match-up against Plymouth North looked like a grim proposition. The Eagles went 26-0 last year, culminating in a Division 2 state championship, thanks in no small part to the 12-0 pitching performance of their ace, Joe Flynn, who was named the Boston Globe Division 2 Player of the Year. Unfortunately for the Rams, it was Flynn’s turn in the rotation as North came to town for Friday’s game.

On paper, the outlook was bleak. But as the folks at ESPN often remind us, “That’s why they don’t play the games on paper!”

As expected, Flynn’s pitches danced and dipped and frustrated the Marshfield batters all day long, but the Rams stayed patient and kept their poise at the plate, and it seemed that every time an opportunity presented itself, the Rams were able to capitalize on it. Their cause was aided by a stellar effort on the mound by senior Rich Upson, and some excellent defensive plays all over the field, none more spectacular than a diving catch by junior left fielder Mike Maher. When all was said and done, Marshfield walked away with a 6-0 win that should give them plenty of confidence as they move forward through the rest of their schedule.
