Things didn’t look so hot at halftime of the Rams’ season opener on Saturday. The visiting Barnstable Red Raiders held a 6-3 lead after dominating possession for the vast majority of the opening two quarters. However, shortly thereafter, a familiar script began to play itself out.
The 2008 Marshfield team was up by a relatively comfortable margin at halftime against Scituate last year, but they watched the Sailors adjust in the second half, and the game ultimately finished in favor of Scituate in heartbreaking fashion for the Rams. Of course, the coach of that Scituate team is now the coach at Marshfield, and he managed to rally his troops once again, only this time, it was Marshfield who benefitted.
Marshfield came charging back to tie the game at 6 in the third quarter, but Barnstable gained the advantage again at 7-6 soon after. Once again, the Rams evened the score at 7, but the Raiders capitalized on a Rams mistake late in the quarter, and the score stood at 8-7 in favor of Barnstable heading into the final frame.
Marshfield finally managed to tie the score with just under ten minutes remaining in the game, and Steve Souza buried the game-winning goal with 5:56 remaining in the contest. Stout Marshfield defense down the stretch helped seal the win for the Rams and give them a satisfying win over a strong Barnstable squad.
