Wrestling vs. Somerset
MEET RECAP: Somerset at Marshfield (January 21, 2009)
Final Score: Somerset 39, Marshfield 28
The MHS wrestling team put forth a valiant effort last night, but ultimately came up short against Somerset in a 39-28 dual meet. However, despite a disappointing final result, there were some great individual performances by the Rams, including pins by Brandon Fleming (160), Josh Fitzpatrick (112), and Brendan Meehan (145), who pinned his opponent in 17 seconds. Tom Pomella scored a major win in his match, and other winners included Bob Driscoll and Joey Pronk.
It was Pronk who had the match of the night. According to MassWrestling.com, Joey is currently the #6 ranked wrestler in the state at 125, but head coach Pat Brown bumped him up to a higher weight class to take on Somerset star Eric Francis, who is the #4 ranked wrestler in the state at 130 pounds. In a gutsy performance, Joey took the 5-2 win.
The other top performance for the Rams came courtesy of Pronk’s fellow senior captain, Fleming, who is the #6 ranked wrestler at 145, but Coach Brown bumped him up two weight classes to face Somerset’s Jon Faria, who sits just outside the top ten ranks at 160. Fleming’s quickness neutralized Faria’s weight advantage in the match, giving Brandon a 12-2 lead after the first period. Soon afterward, Fleming put a stop to the action by getting the pin 43 seconds into the second period.
The other most notable match in the meet was that of Marshfield sophomore Tom Pomella at 171. Somerset’s wrestler was very tall for 171 pounds, whereas Pomella’s weight is dispersed over a short, muscular frame, so it was a strength vs. length match-up. Somerset’s wrestler did some excellent work throughout the first half of the match, fending off Pomella’s strikes using his height advantage, and both wrestlers were scoreless heading into the second period. However, midway through the second frame, Pomella’s power began to wear on his opponent. By the third period, Pomella seemed confident that he could strike at will, and he hustled down the stretch to score two takedowns in the final 20 seconds to earn the major win.
MSB commentator and correspondent Dan Bargar, also a member of the wrestling team, spoke with senior leaders Pronk and Fleming after the meet.
